    So experimenting again .
    This time on the Singer .
    Way way back in 87 when I got it it had rear mudflaps fitted - well I say flaps but the reality was bits of rotten rubber screwed to the arch .
    These I removed but left the holes - a few years later I did get some NOS flaps which i fitted however 20 years later these too fell apart - back to just the holes again
    Anyhoo as this thing is gonna get some use and as im sick of stone chips on the lower rear valance ive come up with some " mini flappage " thingies.
    Made of plastic the same colour as the car and held on with plastic clippy things these " might " help a tiny bit , plastics quite bendy so cleaning behind em wont be an issue - besides they will come off in minutes .
    Looks better without them however it might help with the chips

    Thermax sticky temp thing stuck on Barnabys sump showed this after a 25 mile blat , Rad one remains at 82˚C

    Ah, I wondered. Look after the back Dave, looking fiorward to see the results

    I might fit actual tempo gauges rather than L-H in the 356 when it gets its mackeover, depends if I can get a good looking under dash pod

    I could of stuck it on the bottom by the pick up however looking at it with my back such as it is would be even more tricky than where ive stuck it which in itself is bad enough

    Dave,

    Mike might chip in but oil tends to sink heat to almost every surface it touches and the flow rate with regards to how often th imps whole oil capcity is ran through an imp engine is one for the experts, say perhaps 5-10s per litre so whole contents in sub 1/m depending on revs although I think the pumps flow rate craps out about 4k rpm (thats just something stuck in my head,)

    On some sumps its common to see cooling fins cast into them to increase surface area and perhaps some air flow from under the car as the sump is an easy large surface area over which the oil sits.

    As you already seen water and oil temnps track pretty much in an imp but sometimes different ttypes of transducers seem to read more latent heat from the cast than actual fluid which is why I emntioned sitting the thermocouple sort of mid space in fluid. Does not harm at end of the day as the casting will catch up.

    Dave, not sure on the oil filter but could be very telling on the sump but it would have perhaps been better under the pickup ?

    On the flat 4 I have temp gauges on the oilway and on the sumnp plug which is bang in centre of the sump. It has no actual oil filter but does have a oil coller as the oil does all the work. I actually decide how to drive the car based on the oil temp.

    Pat mentioned other day that the car had a leak at back, no problem I said, it just wants the oil changed

    It is really surprising how some oils can change viscosity at temperature

    Someone mentioned sticking a Thermax on the sump and seeing as they come in a pack of 10 i thought id give it a go,
    Stuck one on the oil filler canister and one on the sump of the Singer , will be interesting to see what they tell me

    So a heatwave and a car with a reputation of boiling , warping heads , headgaskets etc etc ---- not a good combo except a well maintained engine and cooling system should cope fine .
    So as a trial i stuck some Thermax heat sensitive stickery things on the rads of both - these will tell you what the temp actually is and not what the gauge tells you ( although both mine are bob on ) .
    These just give a " max reached " temp so its not a gauge but a good indication of the hottest it got , they dont return to how they were but stay on the indicated max reached .
    Anyhoo Heres the results of both mine - heater off obviously or we would cook - first off the Singer in 27˚C after a 10 mile thrash .
    Second is Barnaby after 140 odd miles to the full English plus 40 odd miles this week to work and back , you can see number 4 block was just beginning to change on this so maybe 85˚C is a more accurate reading of this one

    Jim could be doing with one of these for the BMW but with a taller base to move the engine up a couple of inches and level up the driveshafts.
